Matthew Newkirk is a mid-career artist who has exhibited extensively in Australia, with solo exhibitions in Brisbane and Sydney, as well as appearing in group shows in the US and Korea. He is represented by Onespace Gallery in Brisbane and his work is found in regional, state and federal art collections and libraries across Australia.
His practice often borrows the visual discourses of mass media and its representations of major news and current affairs to critique its power structures. His deconstructions of text and image further disrupt understanding or, on the other hand, simplify to an extreme level as with the collection’s previous holding Matthew Newkirk’s guide to better living and the proposed acquisition of Lies.
