This painting was made by one of central Queensland’s most important mid-to-late twentieth century painters, Clem Forbes. The work is dated to his earlier career, one from 1970 and the other estimated to be the same year, a time at which there were few artists depicting landscapes of this region. It is an oil painting using a scrape-away technique to add main features and areas of texture. It features two characteristically Queenslander houses, with floor raised on stumps, corrugated iron roof and wrap-around verandah. The houses are surrounded by flat plains and bulbous Queensland bottle trees (Brachychiton rupestris).
[ARTIST BIO] Clem Forbes (1938-1997) was a key figure in the Mackay arts community as artist, gallerist and teacher. He established the Bakehouse Gallery on Victoria Street in 1972 and Forbes Studio Gallery on George Street in 1978. He was one of the few painters depicting central Queensland landscapes in oil until his classes produced a new generation of Forbes disciples. By the early 1980s he was considered a leading figure in the visual arts community of Mackay who remained active until the mid-1990s.
