Interpretive text
This painting comes from one of central Queensland’s most important mid-to-late twentieth century painters, Clem Forbes. It is dated to his earlier career, estimated to be 1970, a time at which there were few artists depicting landscapes of this region. The work is an oil painting using a scrape-away technique to add main features and areas of texture. It is likely a study for another painting due to its scale and less detailed rendering.
[ARTIST BIO] Clem Forbes (1938-1997) was a key figure in the Mackay arts community as artist, gallerist and teacher. He established the Bakehouse Gallery on Victoria Street in 1972 and Forbes Studio Gallery on George Street in 1978. He was one of the few painters depicting central Queensland landscapes in oil until his classes produced a new generation of Forbes disciples. By the early 1980s he was considered a leading figure in the visual arts community of Mackay who remained active until the mid-1990s.
