Interpretive text
Matthew Newkirk is a mid-career artist who has exhibited extensively in Australia, with solo exhibitions in Brisbane and Sydney, as well as appearing in group shows in the US and Korea. His work is found in regional, state and national art collections and libraries across Australia.

Newkirk’s Small Talk 2019 borrows the visual discourses of mass media and its representations of major news and current affairs to critique its power structures. Rendered in newspaper-like bold and capitalised red, black and white lettering, the work’s inclusions of commonly heard media phrases disrupt understanding by isolating and subtly altering the language, as can be seen, for example, in the pairing of all-caps ‘INACTION’ with ‘IN ACTION’. The book and its text is viewed in landscape orientation to best exploit the bi-fold wide view for the words and phrases.
