Interpretive text
Flourish 9 is a recent addition to Wyman’s ‘Flourish’ series, with the first three in the series exhibited in 2019. She explores aposematism, a form of camouflage in which an animal’s colour (often yellow and black) function as a siren to ward off predators, alongside her ongoing theme of protest. Flourish 9 demonstrates how this optical strategy has been employed in numerous demonstrations across the globe, including her use of photographs depicting the ‘Yellow Shirts’ of Thailand, the Umbrella Revolution in Hong Kong, Black Lives Matter in the US and ‘Yellow Vests’ in Paris. Her symmetrical patterning within the photo collage continues the artist’s interest in the nineteenth century artist and socialist William Morris’s iconic wallpaper and his ‘ideological textiles’—decoration used as a tool for communicating political beliefs.

Both solo and in a collaborative pairing called CamLab, Wyman’s practice encompasses performance, video, installation, photography and painting. Her most recent work, including Flourish 9, focuses on patterns and masking used by marginalised groups to gain power (aka counterpower). Through this work she investigates visual resistance, specifically camouflage as a formal, social and political strategy in negotiating identity.
