Interpretive text
This work is one of six in the series 'The Principles of Ch'i', completed after the artist's training in traditional landscape painting in Guangzhou, China in 1995. The digital collage consists of urban landscape photographs taken of Chinese cities by the artist, assembled to conform with the artist's freshly learned principles of fan compositions.

Jan Davis is an artist who lives and works in Tullera, northern New South Wales. She is a printmaker and artist book maker who gained qualifications in printmaking from Phillip University, Melbourne, in 1981, and a Master of Arts from Southern Cross University, Lismore, in 1995. She has been displaying her work since 1988, with key solo exhibitions at Lismore, Grafton and Logan regional art galleries as well as representations at Grahame Galleries + Editions and Niagara Galleries. Her artists books are a staple feature in many artist book exhibitions and events nationally, as well as appearing in Poland, Japan, the United States and France. Davis’s works can be found in collections of the Tate, the National Gallery of Australia, National Library of Australia, Parliament House Collection, Museum of Brisbane, University of Queensland Art Museum, several regional galleries, and the State Libraries of Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. Jan Davis has been a long-term participant in Artspace Mackay’s Libris Awards.
