Interpretive text
The Mackay Region has a strong ceramics tradition. One significant artist is Rick Wood (1949-2007) who practiced as a professional potter out of Mackay for over two decades. Wood was an integral, founding member of the Pioneer Potters group; a Mackay pottery studio that grew to accumulate a small but important collection of ceramics from makers across Australia. This collection was donated to Artspace Mackay in 2005 and is the foundation of the gallery’s contemporary ceramics collection.
Wood was renowned for his salt-firing and use of what he describes as ‘fish-scale’ crackle glazing, a technique originating from 11th century China. This work ‘Large 'fish-crackle' blossom jar’ 1998 is a wheel-thrown, stoneware vase with fish-scale crackle glaze.
