Interpretive text
Danie Mellor’s (Mamu, Ngagen and Ngajan peoples) ‘The untrammelled country explored (the naturalists)’ is an early work by the artist in his ongoing investigation into understandings of landscape. In this work Mellor looks to the tradition of botanical drawing, depicting plants and animals in isolation. Presented in elliptical tondi, Mellor is referencing historical representations of flora and fauna on Queensland tourism postcards, contrasting this to a holistic perception of ecology as practised by First Nations peoples.
