Maria Emma McBurney (1852-1935) lived in Mackay in the late 19th century after marrying Robert McBurney, the area’s Government Medical Officer. This still life features colourful acalypha leaves and various Melanesian crafted objects including a comb, coins, and two crossed spears. McBurney’s husband was a co-owner of the ‘Lavinia,’ a vessel that brought indentured labourers from the South Sea Islands to plantations in Central Queensland.
