Denise Vanderlugt is a well known central Queensland artist who resided in Mackay’s neighbouring region, the Whitsundays for over 30 years. Vanderlugt’s practice has focused on textile elements since the early 70s when she first encountered quilting techniques. Since this time, Vanderlugt has been concerned with her immediate natural environment, with collected and salvaged textiles remaining an integral part of her visual aesthetic. Her practice today spans artists’ book making, illustration, weaving, collage and sculpture.

Living with green combines Vanderlugt’s surrounding Whitsunday tropical environment with a long-held interest in the materiality of paper. Her threaded coiled images are suspended in stiff hand-made card, each page fanning out from an accordion-style binding to provide small windows of green--the artists’ tropical surroundings. Of this work Vanderlugt writes, “The natural world has provided me with continued inspiration for the majority of my artistic practice. The undertaking of rewilding our block of degraded land has brought the movement of wild creatures who visit our garden of local plants. The colour green is ever present as a result.” Denise Vanderlugt 2022.
