Brian Robinson, raised on Waiben (Thursday Island) and now Cairns-based is known nationally and internationally for his vinylcut printmaking, sculpture and public art, including Deco Blooms located in the Mackay CBD. He is one of Australia’s leading contemporary Torres Strait Islander practitioners with over 25 years exhibiting experience both in Australia and overseas. Robinson’s work is held in major collections including the National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria, Art Gallery of Western Australia and Queensland Art Gallery/ Gallery of Modern Art.

Reflecting the tropical environ and inhabitants of northern Australia, with particular connection to his ancestral home Waiben, Robinson imbues Torres Strait Islander motif, storytelling and culture in his art. Animals from ancestral stories alongside native flora are key design elements in both his sculptural and printmaking practice. Building on his storytelling practice, Robinson’s Mackay commission will directly reference the Mackay environment, interweaving Torres Strait cultural storytelling and his focus on First Nations land management.

Robinson in 2022 writes “Spring + Sprout II looks at flowering plants and vegetation that grow in abundance after the onset of the great monsoons across the country. This natural world of local wildflowers and other flora that grow at certain times throughout the seasonal calendar are a great source of food and contain medicinal properties that have fed and healed Indigenous peoples for tens of thousands of years.”
