Interpretive text
This hand-coloured lithograph is originally from John Gould’s 1863 book The Mammals of Australia. The Englishman Gould and his illustrator, Henry Constantine Richter, were encountering Australian native animals for the first time. Many prints, including this image of what Gould named echidna setosa (hairy echidna), treated the creatures as if they were fascinating objects from “another planet.”
